UNIT 3: AT THE SEASIDE
LESSON 1 (Period 1)
A.OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
– Vocabulary: Distinguish “sail”, “sea” and “sand”
– Grammar: Understand the meaning and reading of each word
– Practice skills: Ss improve their speaking and listening skills
2. Competences:
– Communication, self study, self-check
3. Quality: Students can read, understand meaning and distinguish words

C. PROCEDURE
I. WARM- UP (5’)
a. Goal: Refresh pupils’ memory of the previous unit
b. Content : ask and answer questions about the actions in progress.
c. Expected result: Ss can remember the content of the previous unit and answer the question correctly
d. Performance
– T asks pupils to work in pairs to look at the picture in Unit 2, Lesson 3, Activity 8 and ask and answer questions about the actions in progress.
– T then introduces the topic of the new unit by showing some pictures of the seaside. Find out if pupils have been to the seaside and, if so, what they did there and what they liked most about it.
– Say “Open your books at page 14 and look at Unit 3, Lesson 1.
II. PRESENTATION (10’)
1. Listen and repeat
a. Goal: To correctly pronounce the name of the letter S/s and the sound /es/, both in isolation and in the words sail, sand and sea.
b. Content: Ss can pronounce new words
c. Expected result: Pupils can correctly pronounce the name of the letter S/s and the sound /es/, both in isolation and in the words sail, sand and sea

Step 1: Transfering the learning task – T draws pupils’ attention to the picture (say “Look at the picture.”). Ask questions to help them identify the context (see input). – Have pupils point to the letter S/s (say “Point to the letter S.). Explain that the name of the letter S/s is different to its sound (say “Listen. /es//s1.). – T Plays the recording of the name and sound of the letter S/s and encourage pupils to repeat (say “Listen and repeat”). Do this several times, with pupils repeating both individually and in chorus. – Have pupils look at the sail (say “Look at the sail!). Then have them point to the word sail (say “Point to the word sail”). Draw their attention to the colour of the letters (say “Look at the colour of the letter s. It is red.”). – Play the recording of sail and encourage pupils to repeat (say “Listen and repeat.”). Do this several times, with pupils repeating both individually and in chorus. – Repeat Steps for sand and sea. – Play the recording in full and encourage pupils to repeat the name and sound of the letter S/s, sail, sand and sea both individually and in chorus Pupils can correctly pronounce the name of the letter S/s and the sound /es/, both in isolation and in the words sail, sand and sea. Step 2: Performing the task Ss do as requested to complete the task Step 3: Discussion Call on one student read these new words in front of class Step 4: Conclusion T correct their pronunciation if necessary, and praise them when their pronunciation is good. |

Content: A set of flashcards (per team), half of which show a target word ans half of which show the corresponding picture c. Expected result: Pupils can match and successfully recall the position of words and pictures |

d. Performance: Step 1: Transferring the learning task – T devides the class into small teams. Give each team two sets of flashcards. Say “ You are going to play Pelmanism” – T instructs pupils to shuffle their flascards and then place them face down on the desk – Explain that team members should take it in turn to turn over two cards. Do the word and the picture match. If they do match, the team member scores on point. If their do not match, the team member should turn both cards face down again Step 2: Performing the task – Ss do as requested to play the game Step 3: Discussion – Pupils play the game in teams in 10 minutes Step 4: Conclusion – T lets pupils play the game, the first team to match all the words and pictures wins |
